Explain the following:
i) [Co(NH)] is diamagnetic, whereas [CoF] is paramagnetic.
ii) [Fe(HO)] is more paramagnetic than [Fe(CN)].
i) [Co(NH)] is diamagnetic, whereas [CoF] is paramagnetic.
ii) [Fe(HO)] is more paramagnetic than [Fe(CN)].
Solution
(i) Co = 3d.
With NH (strong field, Δ > P) the six electrons pair up as t — no unpaired electron, inner-orbital dsp: diamagnetic.
With F (weak field, Δ < P) the configuration stays te with 4 unpaired electrons, outer-orbital spd: paramagnetic.
(ii) Fe = 3d.
HO (weak field): no pairing — 5 unpaired electrons, μ ≈ 5.92 BM.
CN (strong field): pairing leaves t — 1 unpaired electron, μ ≈ 1.73 BM.
Hence the aqua complex is far more paramagnetic.
