List the factors on which the rate of a chemical reaction depends.

Solution

The rate of a chemical reaction depends on:
(i) concentration (or pressure) of the reactants — higher concentration, more collisions;
(ii) temperature — raises the fraction of molecules with energy ;
(iii) presence of a catalyst — lowers the activation energy;
(iv) surface area of a solid reactant — larger area, faster reaction;
(v) nature of the reactants (ionic reactions are fast, covalent ones slower);
(vi) exposure to radiation for photochemical reactions.
