The rate of the reaction 2NO + Cl → 2NOCl is doubled when the concentration of Cl is doubled, and it becomes eight times when the concentrations of both NO and Cl are doubled. Deduce the order of the reaction.

Answer: Order in Cl₂ = 1, in NO = 2; overall order = 3.

Solution

Let rate .
Doubling Cl alone doubles the rate:

Doubling both gives 8 times:
