A 4% solution (w/w) of sucrose (M = 342 g mol) in water has a freezing point of 271.15 K. Calculate the freezing point of a 5% glucose (M = 180 g mol) solution in water. (Given: freezing point of pure water = 273.15 K)

Answer: T_f ≈ 268.35 K (*)

Solution

Sucrose solution (4 g per 100 g solution → 96 g water):

Its depression = K, so the effective constant:

Glucose solution (5 g per 100 g solution → 95 g water):

Depression:

(*) K implied by the question's own data is used, as intended.
