State Henry's law correlating the pressure of a gas and its solubility in a solvent and mention two applications of the law.

Solution

Henry's law: at a constant temperature, the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the pressure of the gas over the solution,

Applications:
(i) Soft drinks and soda water are bottled under high pressure of CO to increase its solubility.
(ii) Deep-sea divers use helium–oxygen mixtures: helium's low solubility in blood avoids the painful 'bends' when the diver surfaces. (Also, the low partial pressure of O at high altitudes explains anoxia in climbers.)
