Give reason: when 30 mL of ethyl alcohol and 30 mL of water are mixed, the volume of resulting solution is more than 60 mL.

Solution

On mixing, ethanol molecules come between water molecules and rupture some of their hydrogen bonds.
The new ethanol–water attractions are weaker than the original water–water attractions, so the molecules are held less tightly and occupy more volume: (positive deviation from Raoult's law).
