What are azeotropes? Give an example.
Solution
Azeotropes are binary liquid mixtures having the same composition in the liquid and vapour phase; they boil at a constant temperature, so the components cannot be separated by fractional distillation.
Example: ethanol–water with about 95% ethanol (a minimum-boiling azeotrope).
