Prove that the curves y2=4x and x2=4y divide the area of the square bounded by x=0, x=4, y=4 and y=0 into three equal parts.
Answer: Each part =316 square units; hence the three parts are equal.
Solution
The two parabolas y2=4x (i.e. y=2x) and x2=4y (i.e. y=4x2) cross at (0,0) and (4,4), dividing the square 0≤x≤4,0≤y≤4 into three regions I (above y=2x), II (between the curves) and III (below y=4x2).
I=∫04(4−2x)dx=16−34⋅8=316.
II=∫04(2x−4x2)dx=34⋅8−1264=12128−64=316.
III=∫044x2dx=1264=316.
Since I=II=III=316 square units, the two curves divide the square into three equal parts. Hence proved.The square of side 4 divided by y^2 = 4x and x^2 = 4y into the three regions I, II and III.
