In the diagrams shown, state which of the diodes are forward biased and which are reverse biased.

Answer: Diodes in figures (b) and (d) are forward biased; diodes in figures (a) and (c) are reverse biased.

Solution

A diode is forward biased when its p-side is at a higher potential than its n-side so that the arrow of the diode points from high to low potential.
Applying this to each circuit, the diodes in (b) and (d) have their p-side positive and are forward biased, while those in (a) and (c) have their p-side negative and are reverse biased.
