Distinguish between p-type and n-type semiconductors on the basis of energy band diagram.

Solution

In an n-type semiconductor pentavalent donors create a filled donor level just below the conduction band; electrons are easily excited into the conduction band and are the majority carriers.
In a p-type semiconductor trivalent acceptors create an empty acceptor level just above the valence band; electrons move up into it leaving holes, which are the majority carriers.
