In the given diagram, is the diode D forward or reverse biased?

Answer: The diode is reverse biased.

Solution

For forward bias the p-side must be at a higher potential than the n-side so that the external field opposes the junction barrier field.
In the given connection the polarity applied across D supports the barrier field (p-side made negative relative to the n-side), so majority carriers are pulled away from the junction and the depletion layer widens.
