Name the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum which are
(a) suitable for radar systems used in aircraft navigation,
(b) used to treat muscular strain, and
(c) used as a diagnostic tool in medicine. Write in brief how each of these waves can be produced.

Solution
(a) Microwaves are suitable for RADAR in aircraft navigation. They are produced by special electronic vacuum devices such as klystrons, magnetrons and Gunn diodes.
(b) Infrared waves are used to treat muscular strain (heat therapy). They are produced by hot bodies and by the vibration of atoms and molecules.
(c) X-rays are used as a diagnostic tool in medicine. They are produced when fast-moving (high-energy) electrons are suddenly stopped by a metal target of high atomic number.
