Name the electromagnetic radiations used for
(a) water purification, and
(b) eye surgery.

Answer: (a) Ultraviolet rays
(b) Ultraviolet rays (excimer-laser UV, used in LASIK).

Solution

(a) Ultraviolet rays are strongly germicidal; passing water past a UV lamp kills bacteria and viruses, so UV is used to purify and sterilise water.
(b) Ultraviolet light from an excimer laser is used in corrective eye surgery (LASIK) to reshape the cornea.
