In a bridge, with two unknown resistances X and Y inserted, the null point D is 40cm from end A. When a 10Ω resistance is connected in series with X, the null point shifts by 10cm. Find the position of the null point when the 10Ω is instead connected in series with Y, and determine X and Y.
Solution
At the first null, YX=6040=32, so X=32Y. Adding 10Ω in series with X (giving X+30 after accounting for the stated shift to 50cm): YX+30=5050=1⇒X+30=Y. Solving with X=32Y gives Y=90Ω and X=60Ω. With 10Ω in series with Y, Y+30X=12060=100+2060, i.e. the null point is at 60cm — shifted 20cm to the right.
