Explain the principle of working of a metre bridge. Draw the circuit diagram for the determination of an unknown resistance using it.
Solution
A metre bridge is a Wheatstone bridge in which two arms are the known resistance R and unknown X and the other two are the parts of the 1 m wire on either side of the jockey. At balance the galvanometer reads zero and XR=100−ℓℓ, from which X=Rℓ100−ℓ.
