A parallel plate capacitor (A) of capacitance is charged by a battery to voltage . The battery is disconnected and an uncharged capacitor (B) of capacitance is connected across A. Find the ratio of (i) final charges on A and B, and (ii) total electrostatic energy stored in A and B finally and that stored in A initially.

Answer: (i) ;
(ii) .

Solution

Initial charge on A:

On connecting B (capacitance ) they share charge at a common potential :

(i) Final charges:

(ii) Initial energy:

Final energy:
