Four point charges Q, q, Q and q are placed at the corners of a square of side a as shown in the figure. Find the: (a) resultant electric force on a charge Q, and (b) potential energy of this system.
Solution
(a) A charge Q (say at a corner) is acted on by the two adjacent q charges (at distance a) and the opposite Q (at distance a2). Each adjacent force is F1=4πε01a2Qq; their resultant along the diagonal is 2F1. The diagonal force from the opposite Q is F2=4πε012a2Q2. Adding along the diagonal, F=4πε0a2Q(2q+2Q). (b) Summing over the (24)=6 pairs: four edge pairs (Qq at a) and two diagonal pairs (QQ and qq at a2): U=4πε01[a4Qq+a2Q2+a2q2]=4πε0a1(4Qq+2Q2+q2).
